In July 2016, the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) released a final rule requiring all local educational agencies to revise local school wellness policies by June 30, 2017.
Highlights include: Parents, students, school officials and the general public should participate and be informed of any changes to the policy. Each school should have one or more officials responsible for compliance with the policies. Local educational agencies must review and consider evidence-based strategies to set goals for nutrition promotion and physical activity, and nutrition guidelines for all foods and beverages sold on or available on campus. The policies must be available to the public and reassessed every three years.
