Spotlight: Preventing Prescription Drug Abuse with Drop Boxes

1 640

The use of permanent prescription drug drop off sites, usually located in law enforcement agencies and select pharmacies, is a prevention strategy aimed at reducing the supply of unwanted or unneeded prescription drugs in the community.  Safe disposal of these prescription drugs reduces the risk that prescriptions will be diverted for misuse.

All community members are encouraged to properly dispose of unused, expired, or unneeded prescription medicine as soon as possible to reduce the risk of others accidentally taking or intentionally misusing the prescription medicine. Disposal boxes are the recommended way to dispose of medicine to ensure the prescription medication does not harm the environment and are not diverted.
